Brief introduction about Project Overview :
One of the important sources for information on the manuscript sources of the Corpus of Indian Knowledge is the New Catalogus Catalogorum published by the Madras University during the last 50 years. The NCC is available as printed book and Vandemataram Library has published it online as a static web pages. However, the NCC volumes have an uneven coverage of the available manuscripts as the project started with just 400 catalogues and towards the end of the project around 1300 catalogues were made use of.
It is estimated that around 2000 catalogues are available today. But there is no facility available to dynamically add any number of catalogues to the existing printed volumes or the online webpages.
The experts of Prof K V Sarma RF have worked in this area all though their work-life and hence have knowledge and facility to contribute in this area.
Every critical edition of any source work of different disciplines of Indian Knowledge requires identification of a minimum 3 manuscripts from different sources. So a Union Catalogue Corpus for Indian Knowledge is the need of the time. With improved interest in IKS, many new collections of Indian manuscripts will be unearthed. There are so many private collections and availability of such facility will encourage even the private collections to share their collections publicly.
This UC-CIK will have not just the location details of the manuscripts of the source-works, but also the facility to digitize the corpus with each collection and host them online. This project is undertaken in association with Samskrit Promotion Foundation(SPF) – Delhi & Central Sanskrit University – Delhi.
In the first phase of the work, all the information included in the NCC will be digitized.
In the subsequent phases all currently available manuscript catalogues will be added.
In the fully developed system will have the capability to hold all the manuscript catalogues from within and outside the country too.
