Details Of The Text: Counted as the first among the Mahāpurāṇas; hence known also as Ādipurāṇa; interlocution Lomaharṣaṇa and the sages; from the absence of quotations from this Purāṇa in the works of early nibandha writers and the contents of the present purāṇa text agreeing with the contents of an Upapurāṇa of the same name as referred to by Narasimha Vājapeyin, this text is held as apocryphal; compiled between 10th and 12th century. See R. C. Hazra, Purāṇic Record on Hindu rites and customs, pp. 145 ̶ 57. The Gautamīmāhātmya in chs. 70 ̶ 176 constitutes an independent work by itself describing the sacred places and temples. The Uttarakhaṇḍa in some mss. is said to be a description of the sacred river Balajā. See Wint. HIL. I. p. 535. For a brief account see Wilson, Viṣṇupurāṇa Intro. For an analysis of the work see JRAS. V. p. 65. The Purāṇa is said to have three different layers. The Purāṇa is a conglomeration of chs. corresponding to those of Viṣṇupurāṇa, Mārkaṇḍeyapurāṇa, Śāmbapurāna, Vāyupurāṇa, Harivaṃśa and Mahābhārata (Anuśāsana; Śānti ̶ parvans).
