PROFESSOR K. V. SARMA RESEARCH FOUNDATION

Prof. K. V. Sarma (1919–2005) was a great luminary in Sanskrit and Malayalam scholarship. Best known for his research on Indian Astronomy, Mathematics and Manuscriptology, he authored over 100 books and 450 research articles. His critical recovery of many seminal texts—like those of the Kerala School—and his foundational work in cataloguing manuscripts has radically transformed our understanding of the Indian scientific tradition.

After completing B.Sc. with Physics Major and MA in Sanskrit, Sarma worked as the Supervising Pundit of the Manuscripts Section of the Kerala University Oriental Research Institute, Thiruvananthapuram during 1943-1951. In this period, he pioneered the deciphering, cataloguing, and preservation of nearly 50,000 palm-leaf manuscripts. From 1951 to 1962, he worked on the monumental New Catalogous Catalogorum project at the University of Madras, an encyclopaedic register of all known Sanskrit and allied manuscripts across the globe. From 1962 to 1983, Prof. Sarma was with Vishveshvaranand Vishvabandhu Institute of Sanskrit and Indological Studies, Punjab University, Hoshiarpur, where he served as the Director during 1975-80. He brought out pioneering editions of works of the Kerala School of Astronomy and Mathematics and brought to light their unparalleled contributions (pre-dating the discovery of Calculus and Non-geocentric Planetary Models in Europe). Prof. Sarma was awarded with D.Litt. Degree from Punjab University in 1978 for his comprehensive Contributions to the Study of the Kerala School of Hindu Astronomy and Mathematics. After his tenure at the Vishveshvaranand Institute, Prof. Sarma shifted to Chennai. He continued to be very active till his last days, when he completed his landmark edition and translation of Gaṇita-Yuktibhāṣā in 2005. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Prof. Sarma was awarded the Certificate of Honour by the President of India in 1992. He was conferred the Vacaspati Title by the Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha, Tirupati, in 2002.

In 1997, Prof. Sarma founded the Sree Sarada Education Society Research Centre in Chennai as a part of Sree Sarada Education Society, Trivandrum. With the blessings of the Trustees of Sree Sarada Education Society, its Chennai Centre was reconstituted and renamed, in honour of its founder, as the Professor K. V. Sarma Research Foundation (PKVSRF) in 2010.

PKVSRF is a premier research institution dedicated to preserving, researching, and publishing works related to Bhāratīya Jñāna Paramparā. All the scholars associated with the Foundation have major contributions to their credit in various disciplines of Indian Knowledge. In particular, Prof. Siniruddha Dash, has edited the last 25 volumes of the New Catalogous Catalogorum. He and Dr. Mamata Misra have contributed significantly to the successful completion of the NCC Series being published by the University of Madras. Profs. M. S. Sriram, M. D. Srinivas and K. Ramasubramanian have published important works on Indian Astronomy and Mathematics, with special focus on the work of the Kerala School.

INTRODUCTION TO UCCIK.IN :

NCC Volumes and Other Resources

Searchable copies of all the 39 NCC Volumes have been included in the Resources Section of the website. As may be seen, the NCC Volumes list the names of authors and texts alphabetically. In each case, they provide some details about the author and the text. In many cases they also indicate the language (if it is Pali or Prakrit) and subject or the discipline associated with the text. The List of Abbreviations Used in the NCC for indicating the subjects is also uploaded in the Resources Section.

The main purpose of the NCC Volumes is to present a comprehensive list of references to the available manuscripts, for each text, as listed in catalogues of different manuscript libraries. Over 1000 catalogue volumes of about 400 collections have been scanned to prepare these lists, which include the exact page or location number of the manuscript in each catalogue volume. The list of abbreviations used in the NCC for each of these catalogue volumes is also uploaded in the Resource Section.

Currently only 600 catalogue volumes of about 200 collections have been uploaded. The List of Catalogues Uploaded (along with hyperlinks) is also included in the Resources Section.

Searching the UCCIK Database

The uccik.in website currently includes all the information on around 16 lakh Manuscripts of around 1.5 lakh Source-Texts in Sanskrit, Pali and Prakrit, that has been compiled in the 39 volumes of the New Catalogous Catalogorum. In addition, wherever possible, links have been provided to the catalogue volumes to which references have been made in the NCC volumes.

All this information has been compiled in uccik.in in the form of a searchable database. Search can be made on phrases (in the Devanāgarī script or English script with diacritics) that are part of the “Title” of a work, or of the name of the “Author”. Search can also be made by the “Subject” classification used in the NCC.

The outcome of any search is displayed as a list of Texts in the database that tally with the search. For each Text, there is an associated “NCC_ID”. For instance, the NCC_ID “05.263b.10” refers to the 10 th Text mentioned in the right column of the page numbered 263 of the NCC Volume 5.

If a search made for the Title “Gaṇitasārasaṅgraha”, a part of the search output is shown below. The search output can be reordered in the ascending/descending order on any of the fields by clicking the button next to the field title.

Upon clicking on the second row of the above output, which pertains to the Text “Gaṇitasārasaṅgraha”, all the details regarding the text and its 60 manuscripts will be displayed, part of which is shown below.

Upon clicking on the “Folder_link” of the first row (MSS_0001), the links to the three catalogue volumes of “Adyar” will be displayed.

Upon clicking on the “Folder_link” of the second row (MSS_0002), the link to the catalogue volume “Arrah 1” will be displayed.

Similar outputs can be obtained in searches involving the name of the “Author” and “Subject”.

The Databases Section

There is also a “Databases Section”, which provides the facility to browse the Database associated with each individual volume of NCC.

Upon clicking on Volume-III, the first 50 entries of that volume will be displayed, a part of which is shown below.

Then, by clicking on the first Text “Ūkhāsaṃbharaṇakāṇḍa from Śatapathabrāhmaṇa”, the references and the links to all the three Manuscripts of this Text will get displayed.

This is just a brief introduction to the contents of uccik.in and the ways to use it.
