About UCCIK

UCCIK (Union Catalogue of the Corpus of Indian Knowledge) is a pioneering effort towards creating a comprehensive Database of all the Manuscripts of Source-Texts of Indian Knowledge (Bhāratīya Jñāna Paramparā). UCCIK has been designed in the form of a searchable web-based database, which is able to incorporate systematic information on Manuscripts in various languages of all the Source-Texts of Indian Knowledge, as listed in the catalogues of public and private collections located in India and abroad.

KVSRF conducts higher research on the Indian Traditional Knowledge System such as Astronomy, Mathematics, Ayurveda and other sciences, as well as Indian Arts, Literature and Culture and also publish the findings in the form of books, articles etc.

This web-based searchable database has been created by the Professor K. V. Sarma Research Foundation (PKVSRF), Chennai, in collaboration with the Samskrit Promotion Foundation (SPF), New Delhi, with financial assistance received from the Central Sanskrit University (CSU), New Delhi.

UCCIK is a significant step towards building a Master Database which can be utilised for compiling and storing information on all Indian Manuscripts in a searchable form. Though the UCCIK database is currently populated with the data on around 1.5 lakh Source-Texts in Sanskrit, Pali and Prakrit, the database structure is robust and can accommodate Manuscripts in all the Indian Languages of Source-Texts of all branches of Indian Knowledge, and also Manuscripts of Texts in other languages (such as Tibetan, Chines, Arabic, Persian, etc.) which happen to be translations of Indian Source-Texts.

PROFESSOR K. V. SARMA RESEARCH FOUNDATION

Prof. K. V. Sarma (1919–2005) was a great luminary in Sanskrit and Malayalam scholarship. Best known for his research on Indian Astronomy, Mathematics and Manuscriptology, he authored over 100 books and 450 research articles. His critical recovery of many seminal texts—like those of the Kerala School—and his foundational work in cataloguing manuscripts has radically transformed our understanding of the Indian scientific tradition.

After completing B.Sc. with Physics Major and MA in Sanskrit, Sarma worked as the Supervising Pundit of the Manuscripts Section of the Kerala University Oriental Research Institute, Thiruvananthapuram during 1943-1951. In this period, he pioneered the deciphering, cataloguing, and preservation of nearly 50,000 palm-leaf manuscripts. From 1951 to 1962, he worked on the monumental New Catalogous Catalogorum project at the University of Madras, an encyclopaedic register of all known Sanskrit and allied manuscripts across the globe. From 1962 to 1983, Prof. Sarma was with Vishveshvaranand Vishvabandhu Institute of Sanskrit and Indological Studies, Punjab University, Hoshiarpur, where he served as the Director during 1975-80. He brought out pioneering editions of works of the Kerala School of Astronomy and Mathematics and brought to light their unparalleled contributions (pre-dating the discovery of Calculus and Non-geocentric Planetary Models in Europe). Prof. Sarma was awarded with D.Litt. Degree from Punjab University in 1978 for his comprehensive Contributions to the Study of the Kerala School of Hindu Astronomy and Mathematics. After his tenure at the Vishveshvaranand Institute, Prof. Sarma shifted to Chennai. He continued to be very active till his last days, when he completed his landmark edition and translation of Gaṇita-Yuktibhāṣā in 2005. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Prof. Sarma was awarded the Certificate of Honour by the President of India in 1992. He was conferred the Vacaspati Title by the Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha, Tirupati, in 2002.

In 1997, Prof. Sarma founded the Sree Sarada Education Society Research Centre in Chennai as a part of Sree Sarada Education Society, Trivandrum. With the blessings of the Trustees of Sree Sarada Education Society, its Chennai Centre was reconstituted and renamed, in honour of its founder, as the Professor K. V. Sarma Research Foundation (PKVSRF) in 2010.

PKVSRF is a premier research institution dedicated to preserving, researching, and publishing works related to Bhāratīya Jñāna Paramparā. All the scholars associated with the Foundation have major contributions to their credit in various disciplines of Indian Knowledge. In particular, Prof. Siniruddha Dash, has edited the last 25 volumes of the New Catalogous Catalogorum. He and Dr. Mamata Misra have contributed significantly to the successful completion of the NCC Series being published by the University of Madras. Profs. M. S. Sriram, M. D. Srinivas and K. Ramasubramanian have published important works on Indian Astronomy and Mathematics, with special focus on the work of the Kerala School.
